Steve’s motorsports résumé spans land-speed racing at Bonneville, fifteen certified track and course records at ten circuits, endurance racing on two continents, and vintage racing — documented below in one place.

  • Bonneville land-speed record holder (2016, as a rookie)
  • 25 Hours of Thunderhill — 5th in class (2014)
  • British C1 Racing series — Silverstone & the 24H 2CV at Spa-Francorchamps (2019)

  • More than 25 years on track (1999–present)

Land-Speed Racing

At the 2016 Bonneville Speed Week, driving Tom Donney’s two-stroke Saab Sonett II, Steve earned his rookie license and broke a class land-speed record, with GPS speed measures showing the little Saab hitting the 124 MPH mark. The story was told in Hemmings Sports & Exotic Car‘s February 2017 feature “Super Sonett Transport.”

Track & Course Records

Between 2010 and 2018, Steve set 15 certified track and course records at ten different race circuits — 12 NASA (National Auto Sport Association) track records and three SCCA (Sports Car Club of America) U.S. Majors course records — across seven classes and three different race cars. The records span tracks in seven states: Colorado, Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, and Iowa. Several of them improved on Steve’s own previous marks — at Putnam Park and Iowa Speedway on back-to-back days, and at Brainerd across successive seasons. Each entry links to the signed certificate.

Endurance Racing

Steve’s endurance racing began with the 24 Hours of LeMons — a 13-hour first event at MSR Houston in February 2009 in a $500 Infiniti Q45 that got the whole team hooked — and continued through LeMons and ChumpCar events from 2009 to 2012 in a Datsun 510, a Porsche 914, a Datsun 280Z, and a Ford Escort, at tracks from Nelson Ledges to High Plains Raceway. In December 2014 he raced a Lotus Exige in the 25 Hours of Thunderhill, North America’s longest closed-course endurance race, finishing fifth in class. In 2019 he took endurance racing to Europe in the British C1 Racing series — Silverstone in April, then the 24H 2CV at Spa-Francorchamps in October — and in January 2020 he ran the 6 Hours of Sebring in a Spec Racer Ford.

Road Racing & Time Trials

Steve started in SCCA autocross at eighteen, driving his father’s Sunbeam Tiger, and moved through SCCA driving school and years of track days into wheel-to-wheel competition. From 2010 to 2016 he campaigned a Panoz Esperante GTS in NASA’s ST1 class and SCCA GT2, then an Elan NP01 prototype from 2017 to 2024 in NASA’s NP01 class and SCCA P2 — competing at many of North America’s best-known road courses, including Road America, Mid-Ohio, Road Atlanta, Circuit of the Americas, and Barber Motorsports Park. More recently he has raced NASA Spec Miata (2023–2024) and runs Time Trials at Road America with the Northwoods Shelby Club (2024–2026) in a Mustang Shelby GT350 and a Boss 302S — the same club his father raced with beginning in 1977.

Vintage Racing

Steve has vintage raced since 2012, when he brought an Austin Mini Cooper S to Motorsport Park Hastings. In VSCDA competition he has campaigned his Austin-Healey Sprite at Grattan Raceway and Road America (2018–2021), brought his Triumph TR4 to the Kastner Cup (2017) and Road America’s WeatherTech International Challenge (2023 and 2025), and raced his Sprinzel Sebring Sprite at the 2024 Kastner Cup weekend at Blackhawk Farms and the World Healey Challenge at Road America. The race weekends, driving schools, and the preparation between them are documented on This Week With Cars.
