Buyer’s Guide — Triumph TR2 & TR3
What to know before buying a Triumph TR2 or TR3.
Overview
The Triumph TR2 (1953–55, ~8,600 built) and TR3/TR3A/TR3B (1955–62, ~74,800 built) established Triumph as a major sports car manufacturer. The TR2 introduced the robust 1,991 cc wet-liner four-cylinder engine, and the TR3A became the most popular with its wider grille and exterior door handles. These are rugged, powerful sports cars built for enthusiastic driving.
What to Look For
| Chassis | Ladder-frame chassis is sturdy but check for corrosion at crossmembers, outriggers, and spring mounting points. |
| Body | Steel body panels bolt to the chassis. Check rear wings, sills, door skins, and floor pans for rust. Replacement panels are available. |
| Engine | The wet-liner four-cylinder is strong and torquey. Check for coolant in the oil (liner seals), good oil pressure (50+ psi), and smooth running. The wet liners can be replaced during a rebuild. |
| Gearbox | Four-speed, optional overdrive. Overdrive is very desirable. Check for worn synchros on 2nd gear. The gearbox is robust. |
| Rear Axle | Banjo-type rear axle. Listen for whining. The axle is strong but bearings and seals can wear. |
| Front Suspension | Independent with coil springs. Check for worn trunnions — they require regular greasing and wear causes dangerous handling. This is the main maintenance item on TRs. |
Parts Availability
Excellent — Moss Motors, Rimmer Bros, TRF (The Roadster Factory), and Victoria British carry comprehensive stocks. The TR Register and Vintage Triumph Register are excellent club resources.
What a Good One Should Feel Like
Raw, powerful, and exciting. These are proper sports cars with strong engines that reward enthusiastic driving. The steering should be direct, the gearbox positive. The ride is firm but not punishing. The exhaust note is distinctive and purposeful. With overdrive, the TR3A makes an excellent long-distance tourer.

TR2s are rarer and command a premium. TR3A is the most common and best-supported. Overdrive adds 10–15% to value.
