Buyer’s Guide — MG TF

What to know before buying an MG TF.

Overview

The MG TF was produced from 1953 to 1955, with approximately 9,600 built. It was the final evolution of the T-series, bridging the gap to the modern MGA. The TF featured a lower, more streamlined body with faired-in headlights and a raked radiator. Available with the 1,250 cc XPAG engine (TF) or the 1,466 cc XPEG engine (TF 1500). The TF 1500 is the more desirable variant.

What to Look For

Ash Frame Same wood-framed body as TC/TD. Check carefully for rot at all stress points.
Chassis Similar to TD — check crossmembers and outriggers for corrosion.
Engine (XPAG) 1,250 cc — same as TC/TD. Well-proven and parts are available.
Engine (XPEG) 1,466 cc in the TF 1500 — more torque, better cruising ability. Check for same issues as XPAG plus ensure correct engine is fitted.
Body The TF’s lower body and faired headlights make it more attractive but also more expensive to restore — some panels are TF-specific.
Front Suspension Same IFS as TD. Check king pins and bushes.
Brakes Hydraulic drums. Adequate for the car’s weight and performance.

Parts Availability

Good but some TF-specific body parts are less readily available than TC/TD equivalents. The XPAG/XPEG engine parts are well-supported. Moss Motors and specialists carry most items.

What a Good One Should Feel Like

The most refined T-series. The TF feels lower and more modern than the TC/TD with its restyled body. The TF 1500 has noticeably more midrange torque making it the best T-series for touring. Steering and handling are similar to the TD. It should feel like a proper sports car that you could use regularly.
